A LOOK BACK AT THE 1977
STAFFORD MOTOR SPEEDWAY SEASON

By: Scott Running

The 1977 season at Stafford Motor Speedway saw a reversal of fortunes for Geoff Bodine. Bodine dominated the 1976 season with 9 feature victories, but he lost out in the race for the track championship to Fred DeSarro. In 1977, it was Bugsy Stevens who was the big winner of the modified season with 7 feature wins, including 4 in a row, but it was Bodine who claimed the track championship by a scant 2-point margin over Ron Bouchard.

The track championship was the second of what would be three career track championships at Stafford for Bodine. The championship fight was a close battle all season long between Bouchard and Bodine and went down to the final event of the year. Bouchard won the final event of the 1977 season, but Bodine finished right on his bumper in second place to secure the track title.

The 1977 season began with five different feature winners in the first five events of the year, matching the 1976 total of different feature winners. There were 7 different drivers to reach victory lane during the 1977 modified season at Stafford. 1977's modified winners were Stevens (7), Bodine (3), DeSarro & Bouchard (2 each), and Ed Flemke, Ray Miller, and Maynard Troyer each won once.

In the Late Model Sportsman division, it was a season of dominance for Tom Rosati. A year after winning the World Junior Go Kart Championship, the 17-year old put together a season for the ages, winning 10 times, including a run of 7 wins in a row, to take the track championship ahead of John Falconi and Gary Stavens. With Rosati's dominance, there were only two other feature winners during the season: Paul Cianci (3) and Falconi, who recorded a single win during the year.

Stafford's Street Stock division featured a back and forth duel between Dave Fisck and Pat Chambrello for the track championship with Fisck taking the title by an 8-point margin. Fisck was the big winner of the year in the Street Stock division with 5 wins. Tony Modena, Dick Goulet, and Jim Ward each won twice with Chambrello, Dave Dupris, Bob Garceau, and Tony Sylvester each winning once.
