LOOK BACK AT THE 1971 By: Paul Arute 1971 was a year of changes at Stafford Motor Speedway; Jack Arute Sr. realized that much had to be done to make Stafford the first class operation he was striving to make it. New grandstands, concession stands, enlarged track offices, press facilities, and a paved midway greeted fans in 1971. This was the beginning of a new era for the speedway. It was also a year of dominance for Bugsy Stevens; he won 10 races and went on to win his third track championship in six years. He went on to win 10 races in 1971 and edged out Fred DeSarro, Hop Harrington, and Leo Cleary in the points standings. Bugsy becomes the only driver to win Stafford championships on both asphalt and dirt. In the Hobby Stocks Frank Edwards was crowned champion for the second consecutive year with Gary Ryan second and Frank Walmsley third. Edwards, an Ashaway, RI native, became the first racer since the track was paved to win back-to-back track championships.
